‘A heart-warming & uplifting story of tiny paws and stupendous bravery’ Bear Grylls
‘A tale of a tiny dog with a massive heart’ Inside Soap
‘Exciting, enjoyable and heartwarming’ Dogs Monthly
March 1944: in the war-torn jungle two survivors met and forged an extraordinary partnership. One was a mystery bundle of matted hair – a tiny Yorkshire terrier abandoned in a Japanese foxhole. The other was a US air-crewman serving with a photo-reconnaissance squadron, flying daring sorties to capture enemy positions on film.
Bill Wynne shared his tent, his rations and the hardships of the jungle with his adopted canine companion, named Smoky, after her distinctive colouring. They survived raids by enemy warplanes and suicide attacks by Japanese kamikazes, not to mention the exotic diseases and the venomous critters that stalked the jungle.
It took a very special kind of dog to serve with a unit like the 26th Photo Reconnaissance Squadron. This is Smoky’s incredible, life-affirming story, told through the lens of the Squadron’s war-winning work, and bought vividly to life by best-selling author Damien Lewis.
